Arcades, hillside farms and lakes between the capital and the Jura
Bern's old town with its six kilometres of arcades is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Aare invites you to swim right in the middle of the city. Around the capital a varied landscape opens up: to the east the hilly Emmental with its farms, to the west the flat Seeland with the lakes of Biel, Murten and Neuchâtel.
The Emmental stands for cheese, covered wooden bridges and farmhouses with deep, sweeping roofs. In the Seeland vegetable fields, wine villages on Lake Biel and St. Peter's Island follow one another. In the Oberaargau old mills and monasteries shape the scenery.
Many Parkn'Sleep hosts are farming families in the Emmental or winegrowers in the Seeland. You stay overnight legally, often with a farm shop right next door.
Bern's old town, the covered wooden bridges of the Emmental and the wine villages on Lake Biel. The Seeland is Switzerland's vegetable garden, and the Emmental is the home of the cheese with the holes.
Swimming in the Aare in Bern, bike tours on the Heart Route through the Emmental and boat trips on the Three Lakes. In the Seeland you can cycle on flat paths, hike up the Napf and stroll through the vineyards on Lake Biel.
May to September for the Aare, the lakes and bike tours. In autumn the Seeland is worth a visit for the grape harvest, and in November for the Zibelemärit. The Emmental is beautiful all year round, even on foggy days.
It is hardly possible in the old town. Pitches on the edge of the city with a tram or bus connection are the better choice.
The main roads are, but farm access roads are often narrow. When choosing a pitch, check the information on vehicle length.
Yes, especially between Eichholz and Marzili. The current is strong, so only swim if you feel confident.
