The most common question from camper newbies is not about sleeping, it is about showering. The good news: if you combine three strategies, you will stay reliably fresh even without a bathroom on board, and for longer than you might think.
Strategy 1: the quick-wash kit
For the days between proper showers, a small kit in your wash bag is all you need: a flannel and a water canister, wet wipes (biodegradable) and dry shampoo for your hair. In the privacy of your camper you can achieve an astonishing amount with these, as generations of sailors and mountaineers will testify.
Strategy 2: mobile showers
The solar shower, a black water bag heated by the sun, gives you a warm shower in the evening without any power or gas. If you want privacy, add a shower tent, which doubles as a changing room and toilet cubicle. And a simple garden sprayer with a shower head rinses feet, dishes and sandy kids alike.
Strategy 3: other people's facilities
You can shower almost anywhere on the road if you know where: indoor and outdoor pools, gyms with a day pass, campsite shower blocks (often open to passing travellers for a fee), and of course pitches where the host offers shower access. Only one source is off-limits as a bathroom: the mountain lake with soap. Swimming yes, shampoo no. Even the «biodegradable» kind does not belong in the water but in the soil a few metres away, or better still, down a drain.
🚿 Looking for a pitch with a shower? Many hosts in the network let you use their shower or bathroom, and you can see this in the pitch profile before you book.
