Camping with your dog: how your four-legged friend becomes the best travel buddy

Dirt track through green countryside

Hardly any travel style suits dogs as well as camping: no plane, no hotel ban, nose permanently in the wind. To keep things relaxed for everyone, you only need three things: the right kit, a few iron rules and pitches where your dog is not just tolerated but welcome.

The packing list doubles, but cleverly

If you pack with a dog, you pack twice: a bowl and the usual food (switching food on holiday will come back to bite you), a lead plus a long line, the vaccination record and EU pet passport for border crossings, tick tweezers, a towel just for the dog and, often underestimated, its blanket from home. The familiar smell turns any unfamiliar pitch into home turf within minutes.

The one rule that is not up for negotiation

A parked camper heats up to life-threatening temperatures within minutes in the summer sun. Your dog never stays alone in a closed vehicle, not even «just for a moment». Plan shopping and sightseeing so that someone always stays with the animal, or choose the cooler hours at the start and end of the day. And on the pitch, be considerate: not every neighbour loves dogs, and some are afraid of them.

Where dogs are truly welcome

The difference between «dogs allowed» and «dogs welcome» is huge. On farm pitches, animals are often part of everyday life anyway; the key is to respect your hosts' house rules. The Brunner family from our host story, for example, ask you to keep dogs on a lead because of the farm cats: one line in the pitch profile that, if read beforehand, makes the whole stay relaxed.

🐾 Handy: in the pitch profiles at parknsleep.app you can see before booking whether dogs are allowed and which rules apply, so there are no surprises when you arrive.
