Camper in a car park against a mountain backdrop

Some sayings are heard at every campfire, and that is exactly why everyone believes them. We checked the five most stubborn pieces of camper wisdom. Spoiler: four of them come with a fine.

Das Wichtigste in Kürze
  • «Tolerated» is not a legal status, it is a hope.
  • Bans apply even without a sign at the spot, but a sign ends any discussion.
  • Rest areas are for taking a break, not for a planned overnight stay.
  • Parking on private land without permission can be expensive, while asking is free.

Myth 1: «One night is tolerated everywhere»

The classic, and simply wrong. There are regions that tolerate one night in a vehicle, and others with an explicit ban on overnight stays in every public car park. «Tolerated» is not a legal status, it is a hope. And hope does not help much against a knock on the window at two in the morning.

Myth 2: «If there is no sign, it is allowed»

Bans can apply even without a sign at the spot, through municipal regulations, protected area ordinances or simply because the land is private property. Conversely, though: if there is a no-camping sign, the discussion is definitely over. The sign beats the forum, every time.

Myth 3: «Sleeping in your vehicle is not camping»

Half right, and that is what makes it so dangerous. Yes, in many places simply sleeping in your vehicle counts as extended parking. But the line is drawn by your behaviour: chairs outside, awning out, stove on, and you are camping. Same night, same spot, two completely different legal situations.

💡 On Parkn'Sleep the question does not even arise: all pitches are agreed with the owners, so chairs out and awning open is no problem at all.

Myth 4: «I can always sleep at a rest area»

Rest areas are there to restore your fitness to drive: a rest break is covered, a planned overnight stop with arrival at 10 pm rather less so. Then there is the practical side: rest areas are the noisiest places to sleep and the most at risk of theft. Even where it is allowed, it is rarely a good idea.

Myth 5: «The farmer can't do anything to me anyway»

Yes, he can: if you park on private land without permission, you risk being reported, and in the worst case you also pay for the hassle you caused. The irony: the same farmer would probably have said yes if you had asked nicely. Asking costs nothing. Not asking sometimes costs a few hundred francs.

This article is not a substitute for legal advice and gives a simplified picture as of July 2026. Local regulations are what count.
