After all the bans, here is the good news: they do exist, the cantons that officially say yes to a night in transit. There are two of them, and if you know their conditions, you have two reliable corridors through Switzerland.

Das Wichtigste in Kürze
  • Aargau: one night in public car parks is allowed, unless a sign prohibits it.
  • Obwalden: the cantonal camping law explicitly allows a single overnight stay.
  • Both only apply without camping behaviour: no chairs, no table, no awning.
  • Municipal rules and signage on site always take precedence.

Aargau: the officially announced transit night

Aargau explicitly allows one night in public car parks, as long as no sign on site says otherwise. For anyone heading south in the evening from Basel, Zurich or Bern, this is the most official «stopover night» in the country.

The conditions are the same as everywhere else where sleeping counts as extended parking: no camping behaviour. No chairs, no table, no awning: you park and you sleep, nothing more. And because in Aargau, too, the municipalities have the final say, the sign at the pitch always beats the cantonal rule.

Obwalden: one night, neatly regulated

Obwalden takes its own Swiss route: the cantonal law on camping generally prohibits setting up tents, caravans and motorhomes outside authorised sites, but makes an explicit exception for a single overnight stay, as long as public and private interests are not disturbed. So a night by Lake Sarnen or on the way to the Brünig Pass is perfectly legal.

💡 «Allowed» does not mean «beautiful»: the legal public car park is usually exactly that, a car park. If you would rather have a farm meadow with a morning view than tarmac and a street lamp, you will find pitches in the network in both cantons: Aargau · Obwalden.

The honest assessment

Aargau and Obwalden prove that a liberal approach works, and at the same time they mark the limits of the model: the permission covers the emergency night in transit, not the weekend at the most beautiful spot. If you want more than just sleep, to arrive, cook, sit outside and stay, you need a pitch where that is explicitly welcome here too. The one night is a right. A good night remains an arrangement.

As of July 2026, simplified and not legal advice. Municipal rules and signage on site always take precedence.
